2007 GRANTEES

Union Square Awardees who continue to engage in the critical work for which they were awarded are eligible to apply for project grants. The project grants program aims to help sustain recipient organizations and strengthen the grassroots community working for social justice goals in New York City. The program is open to award recipients who are not currently receiving or being considered for other Union Square Awards funding and who have submitted all reports due from prior grants.

In 2007, the program distributed a total of $400,000 in grants to 16 organizations. Each grant amount was $25,000. Grantees and approved projects are listed below.


Community Outreach

After Hours Project (AHP)
AHP will hire three peer outreach workers to expand mobile HIV-related services to East New York, Brooklyn.

Centro Hispano "Cuzcatlán" (CHC)
CHC will expand its United Tenant Coalition by hiring an organizer to establish three additional tenant associations in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Chhaya Community Development Corporation
Chhaya CDC will expand outreach to the South Asian community by providing education and counseling in housing rights, home ownership, and predatory lending.

Def Dance Jam Workshop (DDJW)
DDJW will launch the "Five Star Outreach Initiative," a campaign to expand programming to special needs populations citywide.

Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE)
In response to the New York City Mayor's Downtown Brooklyn development plan, FUREE will engage community members in creating an alternative plan that reflects the needs of low-income families in the area.

National Mobilization Against SweatShops (NMASS)
The "Grocery Baggers Reach Out" campaign will organize Brooklyn-based supermarket baggers to claim their rights and raise public awareness of their poor working conditions.

New York City Financial Network Action Consortium (NYCfNAC)
The Media Awareness Project (MAP) is a mixed media campaign that will increase awareness and use of community development credit unions among low-income households.

Philippine Forum
The Justice for Immigrants Filipino Campaign will build awareness and mobilize support for immigration reform including a path to legalization and the reunification of families.

Prison Moratorium Project (PMP)
The True Colors Community Initiative is an intergenerational outreach and educational program that aims to reduce gang violence and youth incarceration in Far Rockaway, Queens.

South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS)
SACCS will expand its parenting workshops and English language courses to reach more South Asian immigrant families in Queens.

Organizational Capacity Building

Father John Powis / Bushwick Housing Independence Project (BHIP)
BHIP will expand its organizational capacity by hiring an organizer to direct its housing campaign activities in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Girls Education and Mentoring Services, Inc. (GEMS)
GEMS will upgrade its financial management, fundraising, and program tracking software and train staff to manage information in these key areas.

Neighborhood Economic Development and Advocacy Project (NEDAP)
NEDAP will strengthen the capacity of its NYC Consumer Financial Justice Project by offering free legal services at a community credit union in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Nodutdol for Korean Community Development
Nodutdol will strengthen the functionality of its website and train members in internet and media communications skills.

Picture the Homeless
As part of its staff restructuring plan, Picture the Homeless will hire a lead organizer to supervise organizing staff and support campaign work.

Voices of Women Organizing Project (VOW)
VOW will set up a new office space to accommodate staff growth and foster member participation.
