2008 GRANTEES

The project grants program aims to strengthen the grassroots community working for social justice goals in New York City. To help sustain prior Union Square Award recipients who continue to engage in the work for which they were awarded, the program supports projects that expand community outreach, build organizational capacity, or foster collaboration among grassroots organizations. Organizations not currently receiving or being considered for other Union Square Awards funding and who have submitted all reports due are eligible to apply.

In 2008, the program distributed $325,000 to 13 organizations. Each grant amount was $25,000. Grantees and approved projects are listed below.


Grantees

Damayan Migrant Workers Association
To conduct member education, organizing, and leadership training to strengthen domestic worker campaigns in New York City.

El Centro de Hospitalidad
To hire a part-time community coordinator to expand and enhance day laborer services on Staten Island.

Esperanza del Barrio
To continue the campaign to increase vending licenses and permits, reduce police abuse and improve public image of street vendors.

Families for Freedom (FFF)
To support FFF’s collaboration with the Immigrant Defense Project that expands advocacy, legal support, and training for those affected by deportation.

FIERCE!
To support leadership development activities and campaign for a lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender (LGBT) youth center on Pier 40.

Latin American Workers Project
To conduct community outreach, organizing, and training to strengthen public support for day laborers.

Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center, Inc.
To continue the campaign to ensure safe and affordable housing for low-income residents in West Harlem.

Nah We Yone
To secure a part-time coordinator to oversee program activities and assist with fundraising.

NICE (New Immigrant Community Empowerment)
To facilitate transition to a membership-led organization.

Queers for Economic Justice
To expand Welfare Organizing Project by transitioning part-time organizer to full-time status.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project
To expand legal services and advocacy training for low-income transgender communities.

The Sikh Coalition
To mobilize the Sikh community to advocate for implementation of a civil rights agenda within New York City agencies.

UPROSE
To organize youth around environmental sustainability initiatives including widespread tree-planting and a citywide climate conference.
